The IKEA website says this tea set is "made of tough stoneware". And they are right because I put them in my 325˚F oven for 15 minutes, and they didn't crack and the custard was perfect. I was worried the water bath might cause them to tip over, but I was careful moving the pan in and out of the oven.
Recipe
Makes 6 servings (8 tea set cups and 4 regular-sized ramekins)
Grated zest of 1 lemon
4 large eggs
½ cup sugar
Pure lemon oil or extract (optional)

Tasting Notes
This is a light lemon custard. I was expecting something more like lemon curd, so I was a little disappointed. But, aren't they cute?
On a tangent, these IKEA dishes made me wonder about how IKEA comes up with names for their furniture. I googled and found this funny website that generates an IKEA furniture name based on what you enter. Here's what it gave me when I entered "Shari":

What a darling little tea set. My daughter had a plastic one that surely would have started a fire had I tried to cook anything in. Ah well. Lovely looking custards.
ReplyDeleteSorry the custard taste was a bit disappointing, but you're right. These are totally precious. I love that you used the Ikea tea set! How perfect!
ReplyDeleteI would comment on how pretty your tea-cup custards are, but I'm slightly obsessed with finding out how "Audrey" translates into a Swedish furniture name...:) I love the little tumblers too.
ReplyDeleteThe custards couldn't look cuter in that adorable tea set. The thing about custard is that it's custard:) -- it's really a very light dessert, unlike pots de creme or curds or puddings. Of course, anything would be a treat in that tea set.
ReplyDeleteYou made these look absolutely gorgeous. That tea set is precious behind words -- my four year old would go nuts for your sweet, tiny custards! I cannot wait to try the Swedish furniture name generator!
ReplyDeleteI love the IKEA dishes, too cute!! Perfect for custard!
ReplyDeleteI was expecting something richer too, but fortunately, I liked this anyway. The tea set is definitely super cute. And I love the photo with the citrus slices.
ReplyDeleteI love Ikea! Glad you enjoyed the custard.
ReplyDeleteYou little cups are so nice !! I wish I could come to tea !
ReplyDeleteThose really are super cool tea cups. Lemon cup custard seems the perfect fill for them too.
ReplyDeleteI love your photos! What a fun way to display this recipe and a fun way to make it!
ReplyDeletei knew you were going to find something super cute to make these in! :) love the tea cups!
ReplyDeleteYou never cease to amaze me - whether it be your tiny tea set, or what my name is in IKEA. Do you live in the real world, like, a land without computer or kitchen? Have you ever seen a sunset (not on google)? How do you take a shower without your laptop getting get?
ReplyDeleteI love the tea set, the colors are perfect for the lemon custard
ReplyDeleteI absolutley love those cups - and totally need to go to an Ikea store. I think they recently added one to Kansas City. Can't believe I haven't made it there yet.
ReplyDeleteGreat photo of some yummy looking custard!
I love the Ikea names for things. I haven't been there in a long time, maybe I should go soon?
ReplyDeleteYour custards look gorgeous. I love the little tea set.
The individual servings are really cute in those fun cups :), I love the photo of all the citrus fruits!
ReplyDeleteThose are adorable! I think a trip to IKEA is in order--my girls are definitely still in the tea party stage.
ReplyDeleteYour custards look delightful, especially in the little tea sets. Unfortunately my daugther was not one to play tea party. She was more of a strip barbie naked, cut off her hair and maybe remove a limb type of girl. (Luckily at 14 she seems remarkably well adjusted! and loves to bake, to boot!)
ReplyDeletei just spent like 10 minutes entering random things into that ikea name generator--too funny! and also, i was soooo close to buying those kiddie cups the last time i went there...for the same purpose as you. the custards look so adorable in them--i may have to go back!
ReplyDeleteI heart IKEA.
ReplyDeleteI wish there was one near us.
Oh, they look divine! So simple and light, perfect for Spring (though unfortunately is it Autumn here, now).
ReplyDeleteTOO CUTE!!!
ReplyDeleteHey! But next time you make such gorgeous perfect custard... if I'm not invited, I'm telling your daughters ...mom stole their tea set for her pictures!
So remember! There... (LOL)
Such fun to come over here and see the little tea set! I still have all of mine from when I was a child...the boys never wanted to play with them, go figure, maybe grandchildren someday...I love the one you bought, very nice. The pudding and the blueberry, what a great photo! You got a comment from Dorie...WOW. Wow. Wow. Love the post.
ReplyDeleteYour tea set is just too cute and it makes a lovely holder for the custard. Great job!
ReplyDeleteLove your cups! Your custard looks great!
ReplyDeletesweet.. my ikea furniture is a chair called SKARENBY. i want this tea set. your pictures look great as always.
ReplyDeleteSo, now I need to send for my daughter in college so we can have tea and custard together. Luckily, Spring Break is coming up ... really lovely.
ReplyDeleteBEAUTIFUL. Everything about the post, AND, a dessert I truly want to make. Smashing.
ReplyDeleteSo very lovely -- just lovely. Thank you for brightening up my day!
ReplyDeleteOoh, no fair! You mothers of girls get all of the cute stuff!
ReplyDeleteThat tea set makes for an adorable custard set as well.
The tea set is so cute! Love it. Your custards look gorgeous too. This wasn't my favorite recipe either.
ReplyDeleteLove the citrus slices and the tea set. You got your money's worth, that's for sure!
ReplyDeleteShari, those tea cups and ramekins are so darn cute, I would make the custard just to have them. It all just looks like a little Easter Bunny should be hoppin right through for a little visit and a spoonful of custard too.
ReplyDeleteVery Happy!! :-) I too love lemon curd with its sweet tartness. This recipe was gentle velvet and just a hint I thought. Not too sweet either. A really light touch. Glad you gave us some beautiful photos. Dorie surely liked them. Yippee!

That tea set is adorable! I love IKEA (and can't resist getting the Swedish meatball and linginberry juice when I shop there!) Your custard turned out beautiful! I love your use of citrus.
ReplyDeleteI love the little tea set! The custards look wonderful!
ReplyDeleteOkay, you win for cutest presentation ever!
ReplyDeleteThey are adorable! I agree, the flavor was a little faint, but it was fun to try the recipe.
ReplyDeleteFantastic looking!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous pictures! I love the one with the citrus slices! Sorry you were disappointed with this one! I hope you like next week's better! I can't wait to make it!
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute cute cute idea to make your custard in a tea set!
ReplyDeleteSince you were curious about the names of IKEA products- I've noticed that nearly ALL of them are just Swedish words that are a play on what the products actually are. For example: A kid's hooded bath towel is called "barnslig", which means "childish" in Swedish. A lot of the other ones are male, female, or town names.
Hope that feeds your curiosity.

How great are those little mini tea cups. Perfect!!! The custards look great.
ReplyDeleteI love IKEA. Must go back soon. I have not been in a while! Well, here is some info, my cup handles came off while I was washing them! I guess they were weakened by the heat :-( Maybe, Dorie should put a disclaimer and suggest a variety of cups or something. Oh, well. They lasted for the most part! The custard came out great and we were able to eat it safely.
ReplyDeleteLove the tea set. I hope you will at dress up in a fancy hat and gather some stuffed animals for a proper tea party. Or maybe it would be more appropriate to set your favorite kitchen tools around the table for tea. I bet a Kitchen Aid mixer would have all kinds of fun stories to share. Like almost walking off the counter when mixing brioche dough for example!
ReplyDeleteHow adorable. Your custards look perfect!
ReplyDeleteWhat a hilarious name generator! Love the cute little teaset, even if the custard wasn't quite what you were expecting. I absolutely love the picture of the different citrus slices though.
